An internationally-known theologian and author, Andrew Purves, will be in Columbia in February to give a two-day lecture series at First Presbyterian Church.
Purves is a native of Scotland and a faculty member at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
His lecture series, “The Essentials of the Reformed Faith: Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension” is scheduled for Feb. 9-10. The lectures are scheduled for 9-10:30 a.m. and 6:15-7:30 p.m., Feb. 9 and 4-5:30 p.m., Feb. 10 at the church, 16 Hitt Street. On Feb. 9, he will also deliver the sermons as a part of the 9 and 11 a.m. services at the church.
Purves, licensed by the Church of Scotland, came to the United States in 1978. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Philadelphia in 1979 and was minister of the Hebron Presbyterian Church, Clinton, Pa., until 1983 when he joined the faculty at the seminary where he is Professor of Reformed Theology.
Purves received degrees in philosophy and divinity from the University of Edinburgh and a masters of theology from Duke University. His Ph.D. is from the University of Edinburgh.
He is the author of several books, the more recent of which include “Encountering God: Christian Faith in Turbulent Times” and “Resurrection of Ministry.”
This is the first in a planned annual series of lectures at First Presbyterian Church.
