POLL: Is gun control a religious issue?

Poll:

  • Yes
  • No

Editor's note: This poll was originally posted after the Aurora, Colo., shooting. We have since updated it to reflect more recent events.

The right to bear arms in protected by the Second Amendment to the Constitution. (You can find out more and test your knowledge of the amendment here.)

But even during just the past few years, the world has seen some of its deadliest mass shootings – most recently, at an elementary school in Connecticut. As of Friday (Dec.14) afternoon, 20 children had been reported killed.

A September shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin left six dead and heightened concerns about hate crimes.

And this summer's shooting at a movie theatre in Aurora, Colo., prompted not only prayers, but tighter gun control laws

Some writers have questioned why Christians haven't pushed for stronger gun control, while others have asked whether it's a religious issue at all.

What do you think – is gun control a religious issue?

  1. Of course gun control is a religious issue. What is there in my life that religion should not touch? Nothing. Perhaps more Christians have not promoted the notion of gun control because the notion is silly.

If the killers were going to pay attention to new laws, they would already be paying attention to the ones regarding murder.

But the mass murderers do have one salient thing in common.
They just don’t know Jesus. EOL

And we are each, in part, to blame if they have not heard.

    peace.

  2. Roy, I agree that there is nothing in life from which religion is estranged.  But I don’t agree - and neither do the facts across the world - that gun control “is silly.”

I’ve hunted and done target-shooting; as a Scout I learned firearm use and safety in an NRA-sponsored course.  I’ve also known people from other countries where gun ownership is more limited.  They don’t seem to have a problem with reasonable restrictions; they know that a hunter doesn’t need military-style assault weapons or thousands of rounds of ammo; they know that a gun in the home is more likely to kill a family member than a thief.

But we - or at least our lily-livered legislators - have bought the Big Lie that any restriction on firearms opens the door to black helicopters and a one-world dictatorship.  Don’t drink the koolaid.

    And by the way, “EOL”?

  3. Re:  Roy

This post demonstrates the irrational thinking behind opposition to more and/or better gun safety laws.  I highly doubt that a violently angry or disturbed person is going to be receptive to proselytizing.  As long as guns are readily available, it is inevitable that the wrong person will find one to commit mayhem.

This is not a religious issue, it is a political one.  The money and clout of the NRA buys the support of many lawmakers, who are more concerned with getting reelected than passing more effective gun laws.  Make no mistake, guns ARE the problem.  You don’t hear about someone with a violent agenda using a steak knife or a hammer to take out a bunch of people.
